Building an Elecraft W1
SWR WATTMETER


THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL

As with all kits the very first thing to do is to inventory the kit.
To comfirm that everything is there that is needed.

A rectangular LED was missing. However a quick
call to ELECRAFT solved the issue and one is on its way

Install resistors R10 (240 ohms), R11 (2K ohms), R5 (332K ohms)
R9 (49.9K ohms), R20 (24.9K ohms), R16 (10K ohms)

NOTE! 5% resistors are tan in color while the 1% resistors are blue

Install Resistors R18 (22K ohms), R14 (1K ohms), R22 (22K ohms)
R15 (22K ohms), R15 (100K ohms), R21 (100K ohms), R8 (47K ohms)

I try to align the 1st signifcate digit to the left or the top of the PCB
It makes it easier to troubleshoot if required

Install Resistors R6 (49.9K ohms), R19 (3K ohms) R12 (49.9K ohms)
R13 (24.9K ohms), R7 (49.9K ohms), R3 (332K ohms), R4 (332K ohms)

Install Resistor Packs RP1 and RP2

Confirm orientation before soldering

Install Diodes D2, D1 and D3 (1N5711)

Confirm orientation before soldering

Install Diodes D4, D5 and D29 (1N4148)

Confirm orientation before soldering

Install capacitors C2 (.001uf), C1 (.001uf), C3 (.047uf), C4 (.01uf)
C5 (.01uf), C7 (.01uf), C6 (.01uf), C12 (.01uf), C17 (.01uf)
C10 (.047uf), C11 (.01uf), C16 (.01uf)
Install socket for U4 (PIC16F876A)

Install ceramic resonator (4.00Mhz)

Install grounding loop

Install potentiometer R17 (5K ohms)

Install electrolytic capacitors C9 and C8 (22uf)

Install slide switch S1

Now for fun and games winding a binocular toroid transformer

Ten loops on though each side means nine loops on outside.

Looks nice

Two primary loops. One on each side

Now to assemble the transformer and mount it.

The toroid transformer is the SWR heart

Install Resistors R1 and R2 (51 ohm 3watt ).

These are the Dummy load resistors

Install range LED's green, yellow and red

Install power rectanglar LED's

Install SWR rectanglar LED's

Remember! one shorted. ON order

Install U3 (LM78L05) and Q7 (2N3904)

Install Stereo DATA jack J3

Install power connector J4 and battery holder B1

Install BNC connectors J1 and J2
